History in the making

A legendary Georgian estate reborn — where more than a century of grandeur becomes the backdrop for your most cherished moments.

A New Era Begins

A legendary estate,
timelessly reimagined

Set back nearly 1,000 feet from the road and approached over a winding blue stone driveway lined with towering maples, Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury is one of New Jersey's most storied estates.

Originally built in 1910 as the country residence of Dr. Ernest Fahnestock, the Georgian-style mansion was crafted by celebrated architects Lewis Colt Albro & Harrie T. Lindeberg at a cost of more than $200,000 — a working crop farm transformed into a gentleman's country estate.

Today, that legacy of elegance and gracious hospitality lives on, hosting weddings and celebrations worthy of its remarkable past.

The Estate Through Time

A century of grandeur

From a working farm to a celebrated country estate to one of the region's most sought-after venues — every chapter has left its mark.

1908

Shadow Brook Farm

Dr. Ernest Fahnestock purchased the 115-acre George W. Stillwell farm in Shrewsbury, naming it Shadow Brook Farm and beginning its transformation from crop farm to country estate.

1910

The Georgian Mansion Rises

Construction of the five-bay Colonial Revival mansion was completed — 25 rooms, seven master bedrooms, oak-paneled living rooms, a rose garden of 100 varieties, and formal English cutting gardens.

1943

Shadow Brook Inn Opens

Fred Thorngreen transformed the residence into a modern restaurant, hotel and night club, welcoming diners to the first floor while suites occupied the second.

1953

Rod's Shadowbrook

Under Rod Keller, the venue earned a stellar reputation for elegant atmosphere and gourmet cuisine. The Oak Room was expanded and a Bride's Room designed for wedding parties.

1969

The Regency Room

A grand new room was added — graced with art deco chandeliers and brass handrails salvaged from New York's Paramount Theater — giving Shadowbrook the ability to host two separate events.

1982

An Authentic Restoration

Major renovations restored the estate's early-1900s character: 11.5-foot antique doors, an English-castle honeycombed wood ceiling in the foyer, and paneling from turn-of-the-century brownstones.

A stage for the legendary

Over the decades, Shadowbrook's guest list has read like a page from history — Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, composer Henry Mancini, artist LeRoy Neiman, Mick Jagger, Robert Kennedy and Vice President Walter Mondale have all passed through its halls.

Now owned and operated by a team also behind The Venetian in Garfield and Seasons in Washington Township, the estate carries forward a tradition of fine dining, gracious service, and unforgettable celebration.
